About Jim Vence

My Story:

I am an independent musician; a guitarist adept at most styles of music, having played since the age of 12.  Having recently retired from 33 years as an IT specialist, my new vocation is on practicing, performing and recording music with guitar.  I am available for performance as a solo artist, as a sideman player for bands, or should you wish to hire jazz/pop combos (two to five performers) such as the groups I support;  Monae Miller, and Hot Club Soda.

My Style:

I am best known for performing solo and rhythm guitar in the Austin Gypsy Jazz music scene.   I’ve in fact assimilated several styles over the years.  Growing up on rock and popular music (with a touch of influence from my parents’ Italian folk music collection), progressive rock led me to a classical/New Age and solo ambient music, some of which you can hear on my Music page. This ingestion of Django Reinhardt influenced jazz with finger-style compositions, and the energy of The Who produced my style of playing.

My Claim:

Reliable Guitar!   Next to the company of family and friends, nothing inspires me as much as the opportunity to play music with and for people.  This new profession is a labor of love for me; as my work history attests.   In the nearly 40 years since my first paid gig, I have never missed a committed performance.   I maintain and carry quality amplification and effects as needed for the situation.  My experience in IT and business reinforces my sense of being  professional, and trusted person for your guitar and music requirements.
